Analysis:

Pumping well water saves the City approximately $200,000 a month in imported water costs, per typical water well.

The roof at Well 10 caught fire in 2009 resulting in the well being shut down for two years.  There was excessive heat buildup in the exhaust system at Well 10 due to lack of ventilation and air flow across the natural gas engine and exhaust system.  Well 9 was designed with the same natural gas driven engine pumps, wood roof and ventilation system as Well 10.  This project will replace the wood roof at Well 9 with a concrete and steel decking roof, add wall openings and louvers in the engine room for ventilation and add a roof mounted ventilation fan to pull air across the engine and exhaust system and vent through the roof.

Well 9 is fenced in, but Public Works staff members have reported access and security concerns. Additional chain link gates are to be added to prevent access to the area behind the Well 9 engine room.

The Engineer’s Estimate is $384,000.
