Analysis:
Many of our city facilities were constructed prior to the adoption of Federal and state mandates collectively known as the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). ADA statutes require the city to provide facilities and programs that are accessible to individuals with disabilities, which may require the removal of barriers to mobility and sensory constraints (hearing, vision, touch).
In 2007, Public Works hired a consultant to conduct a comprehensive survey of city facilities to identify areas which may present barriers to individuals with disabilities. Specific components such as parking areas, walkways, ramps, entry access, restrooms, signage, and elevator controls were itemized in a detailed report. Public Works is the recipient of Community Development Block Grant funds for the construction of ADA improvements.
